Definition:
This software allows you to manipulate images: crop, resize, touch-up, apply filters, and convert your photos from one format to another.
Tools:
- FastStone: a toolset that includes image editor, viewer, and converter (Shareware, PC)
- GIMP: "GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring" (Free, cross-platform)
- GoogleSketchUp: easy-to-use 3D modeling software (Free, PC/Mac)
- ImageJ: "public domain Java image processing program.... It can display, edit, analyze, process, save and print 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit images.... It can measure distances and angles. It can create density histograms and line profile plots. It supports standard image processing functions such as contrast manipulation, sharpening, smoothing, edge detection and median filtering." - iPhoto: a tool for organizing, editing and sharing photos; part of the iLife package (Commercial, Mac)
- irfanView [Review]: an easy-to-use image editor and viewer; nice conversion features (Free, PC)
- Adobe Photoshop: software for professional photo editing and graphics creation (Commercial, PC/Mac)
- Adobe Photoshop Express [Review]: online image editing and sharing service, with basic tools such as crop, red-eye correction, touch up, etc. (Free storage for up to 2 GB, web-based)
- Picasa: a program from Google; allows you to organize and edit photos, create collages and slideshows, and share photos on the web (Free, PC/Mac)
- Painter: software to create and edit images, engineered especially as a digital studio for the creation of original artwork (Commercial; Windows XP or Vista, Mac)
- Picnik: browser-based tool for editing images; provides "one-click fixes, including auto- fix, exposure, colors, and red-eye. And the others, like rotate, crop, resize, and sharpening" (Web-based, free; via ProfHacker)
- Sumo Paint: a browser-based tool for creating, editing, and sharing images (Free, web-based)
- UVic Image Markup Tool [Review]: facilitates image markup: users can "describe and annotate images, and store the resulting data in TEI XML files...[it] has a simple enough interface that it can be used by people with little or no experience with editing in XML code" (Free, PC)
- XnView: "software to view, organise, convert graphics and photos files or to create slide show, contact sheet, HTML pages" (Free, cross-platform)
